Living with CPAP
I've been using a CPAP now for about 5 years and also have full beard/mustache. Since I first got the device I've pretty much loved it. I would fall asleep all day long at work prior to using it and luckily I was never fired for "sleeping" on the job, but it came very close to it. I worked in a call center and believe me, falling asleep while talking to someone or waiting for them to do something was extremely frustrating. My mask covers my nose only and is size small and although it leaks occasionally (it really gets bad as the unit ages) I find it WELL worth it in order to have a restful sleep and not having to wake up with acid reflux and/or having to pee 10 times a night because my body never got to the REM stage. I previously slept on my side kind of on my stomach, but with the mask I have not been able to sleep that way. I still was able to sleep on my side, but just not quite the way I prefer too. I too suffer from back pain and have had neck surgery and lower back surgery since getting the CPAP. A quality mattress will go a long way to alleviating or even reducing back pain in most cases. Occasionally I will have problems with the mask or hose getting in the way when I switch sides, but again, in my opinion the benefit of restful sleep outweighs not using it at all.
I also use only 1 pillow and its a cervical pillow. The 3rd one down at this website. http://www.painpointpillowsource.com/page/107...
I do occasionally wake up and find that I've taken my mask off in the middle of the night and have no recollection of doing it, but thankfully it doesnt happen much. I do know others who have used the nose mask and they hated it too. My ex wife went through the sleep study and brought home a CPAP, but she could never get used to it and only used it once or twice. The mask that I use is made by Respironics. It is size small and is the Comfort Classic series. The website that is on my headband is www.comfortseries.respironics.com. I also came home from the hospital after one of my back surgeries with a full facemask that seemed to work just fine too and really works well when my nasal cavities are stuffy or plugged up. I would think that your doctor or health-care professional would take more interest in ensuring that you have a mask that fits well and works well for you. I tend to write a little too much sometimes, but I hope you find any of this useful and also hope that you find something that works well for you.
